    Honestly dude? So much of this could have been avoided if you just made a video saying "Hey, I'm sick and won't be able to do videos until I am better." Being sick means our minds aren't well either and it causes us to not think properly or fully. It makes us more prone to making bad decisions. So don't blame it on the aliens, blame it on the flu at best, yourself at worst. You made those mistakes and that's what got them killed. Plus it's really rather painful to watch...no offense.

    Intense battle. Tip: If you didn't know, the automatic heal module, is also healing stun damage, meaning you can carelessly step into and stay inside of smoke. Different from health damage there is no cap to the healing of stun damage.

    Simultaneously trying to clear the map and hold the door of the UFO was a bad move. You left your guys in front of the UFO to be repeatedly shot at by superior numbers of aliens. In retrospect, the play would have been to try to avoid it entirely until you were ready to storm it, then bring overwhelming force.

    That Guardian armor looks really snazzy. Not quite as cool as black vests over blue utility uniforms (which was coincidentally my favorite look in Stargate SG1) but the black-on-gray with that somewhat Starship Troopers looking helmet is still quite a good look. 3 KIA in one mission is rough. Especially since two of those deaths felt like bad luck - your soldiers weren't really out of position or anything, they were crouched and had cover between them and the enemy. The xenos just had a good day with their accuracy, and to be fair it was feeling like it was time for the pendulum to swing back that way. Had a few missions go by that were pretty clean. Stepping up the air game definitely feels like the move to make. Those xenos are trampling all over Earth's airspace with total impunity, they need to be taken down a notch and reminded of who owns this planet.

    One use of the machine gun can also be to poke some holes in wall at a distance to get some extended lines of fire for the rest of the troops (especially snipers). The downside, of course, is that it also risks opening new lines of advance for the aliens.

    Friendly reminder that the mission had no reinforcements or timer mechanic. Stacking in the building until everyone was ready might have worked better, but hindsight 20/20.

      I think it would’ve been difficult with all of those aliens camping out just inside of the hatch. It would’ve been almost impossible to avoid several of them getting shots off even if the whole squad was parked in an ambush position. And there weren’t that good ambush positions to begin with, though some (but not ideal) diagonal lines of fire could’ve been created by crouching behind the feed troughs and then clearing the blocking wall with explosives and/or the machine gun. But that would almost have necessitated a guess that the aliens were indeed all lurking in the UFO entrance. I always hated that setup, because it’s very hard to deal with without losing soldiers (or getting them very badly mauled), unless you get really lucky with your shots and the aliens get really unlucky with theirs. The only thing that could’ve really helped would’ve been if a (fairly lucky) well placed machine gun burst had suppressed several of the aliens at once, or a very well placed flash bang. And then there’s the problem of mesmerisation, if using the MG, or of getting into a throwing position without getting whacked.

      Had I had played that mission and known that the aliens were placed this way, the only fairly low risk tactic I can think of would’ve been to whittle down the alien cluster inside the UFO’s entry hatch by first shooting it open with the MG from an angle that wouldn’t immediately get the MG soldier reaction fired to death, then having soldiers placed out of the line of fire (say, at each side of the hatch) chug grenades as far into the hatch area as possible and hope to mulch several aliens within the explosive radius. But that’s probably not even a sure fire approach and it’s based on prior knowledge of most of the aliens being bunched up just behind the hatch.

    They had a fighter in the air between your base and a UFO wreck - had you not shot it down I wonder if it would have tried to intercept your dropship Edits and spoilers below 7:34 Dangerous to send your single unarmored soldier to do that 17:00 are your shieldbearers strong enough yet that they can stuff a real weapon in their backpack for when the shield is inevitably broken? 27:00 Just lost a guy to a door being opened and starts talking about corners. Guess Miller was right. 36:01 I wonder if there's a way somehow to fire a burst through a wall/hedge and at least get a suppression 46:30 That helmet sure is... stylish.... 48:00 That's a long production run - might be better to make two for the assaults, plus two for shields at the other base, then the MARS armor, then two more at the main base for the rifles? Produce in both places, and you don't need to make all the armor at once For the US base, I will once again suggest Life, Liberty, and Pursuit of Happiness for the air squadron. For the Asian base, I would suggest Death, Famine, and Pestilence, and the eventual dropship being called War

    You can dodge a lot of the shots in air combat by flying perpendicular to the incoming fire. You don't need to rely on rolls so heavily and it's costing a lot of hp on the interceptors. You have plenty of ammo with this many interceptors, so when the UFO turns to target one of them, have that one fly at an angle to the UFO while the others insert hot lead.

    In current state where one can build 25-55 point class-2-3 hybrids that are hard to defeat with kinetic projectile hardkills and they not get fooled so easily by decoys and jammers with secondary validators - I think putting on ANS ships Auroras is the only way to go. Yes, they are expensive, yes, they draw a lot of power, but at missile volley you want to dedicate all power solely to survive, also ship hulls not allow to use all of them at the same time, some get destroyed at some point in game or overburned via battleshort. Therefore, one needs to build for redundancy. I put all small point defenses slots only with Auroras, and see how many can operate from one side of the ship, like: left, right, top, buttom, bow, stern - and make sure I've enough energy to operate all per side (not all of them at once). Typically having 3 per side is nice with bshort, and having 4-5 active at the same time is very good. Ship will re-orient power to the one that it feels it needs to most - again, not all needs to run at all times. Auroras, may not get all of them but at least they will certainly shot down what they aim at, while other defenses uses points but don't give you so much guarantee, so I argue that its rather to invest more points on something that works, then still a lot of points on something that is situational and random. In the end, the goal is to survive, even if it costs you other nice things to have, which makes no difference if you bring them and you're dead. Also, negating missiles is also something worth a lot of points, because that negates other fleet effectiveness, if they invested small numbers in missiles they will be completely negated, if large, they could be negated enough to render them useless in anything else later on - like hand to hand combat. Longer one survive the less PD importance become, and that power draw won't be necessary anymore once most if not all missiles are used. I.e. for solo Axford put 8 Auroras, for two put 3-4 on each, for 3xDD put 2-3 on each, for 2xDD put 3-4. For 5-6 FF put 1x Aurora on each, select one side only top or only buttom, and re-orient fleet as need be when expecting missile barage. 24-slot bay for chaff and decoys could be usefull on opposite side of the ship, like if you use one Axford and you mostly put yourself bow head on the enemy then you could use bottom-back mount for chaff and decoys. If you have 3xDD and you put mostly on left-right and top Auroras - then you can add chaff/decoy to bottom or if you use left-right and bottom Auroras, then you can put chaff/decoy on the top. Other PD's don't make sense if you have access to Auroras IMO. At lease one radio jammer should be in every fleet, which can be used also for missile defense.

    Really loving this series, can't imagine the effort going into programming/creating these missions with all the triggers for enemy action, voicelines, etc... Kinda reminds me of when I dabbled with map making as a kid in Warcraft 3 and Operation Flashpoint!

    I suspect a second ground team is a good way to LOOSE the air fight which is honestly far more important - you can win using very few ground missions. A decent ground team is a MASSIVE investment once you add up all the expenses. Yes, you'll end up not being able to do ground combat on a few downed scouts but that's far better than getting completely overwhelmed by their air power which would be the result.

    IIRC in X1 you needed 4 AA batteries to garantee that a base wouldn't get invaded. I had a few dedicated airbases with 2-4 hangers and 4 AA, it's a cheapish way to keep the continents happy. I never lost them, but the enemy rarely attacked them either.

    I believe the reason that the shoot down of the first destroyer happened may be the missile battery finishing off the ship as Griffen left.

    Still feels like your getting too aggressive and ahead of yourself again. I'd really suggest trying to reel it back to how you were handling missions and maybe even dogfights in the early game where it was more calm, collected, observant and well thought out. Your going too fast and it's getting you into bad situations that could have been avoided...bad situations that are costing you greatly and your lucky to have only lost so much as you did. Aside from that though? Great stuff still and I always look forward to this series as well as get excited when I see a new episode pop up. Hopefully you feel better soon and I know the illness is part of what's making you make those decisions, but I figured a reminder might help and not be uncalled for.

      I’m not sure if he’s necessarily too aggressive overall. The use of the MARS was quite overconfident, but most of the rest of the actions were fairly prudent and the losses minimal (the MARS is expensive to rebuild, but apart from that he only had one wounded). The problem is that facing the combination of several Wraiths and Gun Drones requires some level of aggression: Trying to set up ambushes can go south very quickly because of the Wraith’s cloak ability and if the Drones have a chance to get a salvo off, they will almost certainly suppress at least two or three soldiers, unless your squad is very dispersed. The fact that he managed to kill off every Drone before they got a shot off, was hugely beneficial and the Wraiths seemed to be much more into “shoot and scoot” tactics than the often mindless aggression shown by other aliens (especially Sibellians). Hence, it would appear that the aggressive tactics meant that most of the Wraiths moved a bit back and were thus less able to use their own ambush tactics. That said, there were a few lucky catches along the way. Especially that the Drone didn’t get a clear shot at the back of the soldiers on the left of the map. But I’ve seen Drones making such moves before, and I think it may be because their movement pattern could be programmed to include swooping around and behind the squad using their hovering ability. This then allows them to spring attacks from unexpected angles and from areas that have supposedly been cleared. They also seem to frequently spend all their TUs on movement, keeping none in reserve for reaction fire, but this means that they can cover surprisingly large distances in a single turn.

      @@DebatingWombat I figured a decent amount of that but I saw at least 3 times that I can currently remember where he made some pretty blatantly bad moves (at least to me) because he himself was going too fast almost like he was stressing and panicking to make his own turns as quick as possible. I understand he probably wants to reduce video length but taking just an extra 30 seconds to stop, look at the situation and think would have most likely prevented the MARS getting destroyed, the drone coming out of the leftmost house to flank him and Ander's getting shot as well as some other things he did that could have put him in a really bad spot had the aliens taken certain actions. I know the cold is some of it and I know how stressed and panicked someone can get playing these types of games since I played BattleTech for quite some time and still occasionally do. But I've seen how calm and well thought he can be in Xenonaughts as well and I feel like he's loosing that these last however many videos long before getting sick.
